Founded in 1976, SOPHYSA was the pioneer in the development of adjustable neurosurgical valves to treat hydrocephalus. Introduced in 1984, the Sophy® valve was the first adjustable valve in the World allowing non-invasive adjustment of operating pressures, to match an individual patient’s changing clinical needs.

In 2004, SOPHYSA launched the Polaris® valve, the first adjustable valve with a lock, specifically designed to resist unintentional changes in operating pressure – a milestone in adjustable valve safety. Polaris® offers the patient an unequalled security against the clinical risks associated with those dysadjustments.

As a neurosurgery specialist, SOPHYSA manufactures and markets a wide range of neurosurgical implants for the treatment of hydrocephalus, including various types of valves, catheters, reservoirs and accessories, a range of ICP sensors and external drainage systems, as well as subcutaneous spinal access ports.

Neurosurgical shunts

Sophysa offers a complete range of neurosurgical implants for the treatment of hydrocephalus: fixed and adjustable pressure valves, reservoirs, catheters and accessories designed to drain CSF from the brain ventricles to another body cavity.


Adjustable valves

Adjustable valves represent the most advanced type of valves for the care of hydrocephalus patients. Indeed, they offer the possibility to the neurosurgeons of adjusting the operating pressure non-invasively, to match an individual patient’s clinical needs.

Two adjustable valves are available from Sophysa: the Sophy® Mini valve and the Polaris® valve, which has the additional feature of being MRI-stable.


Monopressure valves

Monopressure valves are fixed pressure valves, as their operating pressure cannot be changed.

Three types of monopressure valves are available from Sophysa: a ball-in-cone mechanism valve, a membrane valve and two slit-valves.



Sophysa offers a complete range of catheters to connect to the valves: intraventricular catheters to be connected upstream the valve, distal catheters to be connected downstream the valve, and lumbo-peritoneal catheters to allow lumbo-peritoneal shunting.



Various accessories allow completing the shunt, according to the patient’s needs and the neurosurgeon’s practice:

A gravitational anti-siphon device, SiphonX®;

A full range of reservoirs;

Various connectors for catheters.

External CSF Drainage

Sophysa offers a complete range of External CSF Drainage and Monitoring products. These allow aseptic shunting of CSF from the ventricular cavities or lumbar subarachnoid spaces.


External CSF Drainage Systems

Systems allow collection of the CSF flow from catheters. These drainage bags are available as single items or included in a drainage kit with external ventricular or lumbar catheter.


External CSF Drainage Catheters

Catheters allow the CSF shunting from the ventricular cavities or lumbar subarachnoid spaces. They have to be used with the Sophysa CSF External Drainage Systems.

ICP-T Monitoring

With Pressio®, Sophysa offers a unique solution for the joint continuous measurements of intracranial pressure and temperature.

The system is based on the use of micro-sensor-tipped catheters implanted either in a ventricle or in the patient’s parenchyma. These catheters are connected to a dedicated monitor, the Pressio® monitor, compact, light and user-friendly.
